Finally the cooper investigates — and finds Ned the drunk, asleep in the cellar for a month. THE GHOST WAS JUST NED AND HIS LOVE OF BEER! The whole tavern laughs, relief washing over the room.
But… funny thing happened this morning. The singer bought Ned an ale, asked about the cellar. Ned looked strange. Said he’s never been to Cotter’s place. Says it gives him the creeps. Says he wouldn’t go there if you paid him to sleep.
Long, uncomfortable silence. Someone clears throat. “…another round, then?”
